Whoever saves a single life saves an entire world (13.10.2025)

Today, I want to speak about a day etched in our collective soul-a day of profound celebration and solemn reckoning. After two years of relentless agony, the last of the living hostages are finally home, and some of the bodies of those we lost have been returned to their families for the dignity of burial. This is a deeply emotional milestone, a moment of bittersweet reunion after the national trauma of October 7th-a shock that fractured our society, shattered our sense of safety, and left countless people carrying varying layers of deep, invisible wounds. Yet, amidst the undeniable relief and the tears of joy, a persistent voice inside me feels uneasy, because we know that true, lasting peace has not yet been secured.

This unease stems from a harsh reality: the insidious poison of antisemitism, violence, and hate has not been neutralized. In parts of the West Bank, in Gaza, and yes, even among some within Israel and countries around the world, children are still being fed a curriculum of radicalization. We must be clear: education is the primary battleground. It should be a tool for humanization, building bridges of empathy and mutual respect. Instead, it is too often used as a production line for hate and violence, where the demonization of an entire people is a core subject. This ideological war is far from over.

On a day like this, we must also speak of responsibility, loudly and without flinching. Leaders will step forward to claim credit, and while some actions deserve praise, we cannot ignore the catastrophic failures that led us here. Along the way, grave mistakes were made-strategic, moral, and human. We owe the survivors, the bereaved, and the returned hostages more than just applause. We owe them the unvarnished truth and unwavering accountability, here in Israel no less than anywhere else. We were a nation dangerously divided, consumed by political infighting that distracted us from our real priorities. Our leaders chased ghosts within our own society while a monster gathered at the gates.

It is here that Mahatma Gandhi’s powerful warning rings with such chilling relevance:

“It is wrong and immoral to seek to escape the consequences of one’s acts.”

We cannot-we must not-simply celebrate and move on. To do so would be a betrayal. We have a sacred duty to look deeply into why we arrived at this dark chapter, to pursue relentless justice, and to begin the difficult work of repairing what was broken within our nation and beyond. The world, too, must awaken from its slumber and confront the danger of radical ideologies and the international systems that sustain them. We must talk about the cynical flow of funds from banks and even governments that, under the guise of aid or political support, feed these organizations of terror. This money provides a veneer of legitimacy to barbarism, fueling a pure evil that exists not only here but in many corners of the world. We can no longer afford to be silent.

This evil must be actively dismantled. It begins with demanding and enforcing education that is free from radical, barbarian ideologies. It also means confronting the new, insidious wave of antisemitism that has swept the globe, where people rush to blame Israel for a complex and brutal situation it was forced into. This knee-jerk condemnation must stop, replaced by a genuine effort to learn the facts and understand the reality on the ground.

And for those leaders and government officials whose negligence and misplaced priorities contributed to the horrors of October 7th-their moral authority has been forfeited. They cannot be the ones to lead us forward. A new generation of leaders must rise, leaders who understand that their mandate is not self-preservation or political gain. Their mission must be clear and absolute: to constantly work and lead for the prevention of evil. This is the fundamental duty of any government, and of any society. On this day of return, let us honor the living and the dead by demanding nothing less.

היום, אני רוצה לדבר על יום שנחרט בנשמתנו הקולקטיבית - יום של חגיגה עמוקה וחשבון נפש נוקב. לאחר שנתיים של ייסורים בלתי פוסקים, אחרוני החטופים החיים שבו סוף-סוף הביתה, וגופותיהם של חלק אלו שאיבדנו הוחזרו למשפחותיהם לקבורה מכובדת. זוהי אבן דרך טעונה רגשית, רגע של איחוד מר-מתוק לאחר הטראומה הלאומית של השבעה באוקטובר- זעזוע שריסק את החברה שלנו, ניפץ את תחושת הביטחון שלנו, והותיר אינספור אנשים נושאים רבדים שונים של פצעים עמוקים ובלתי נראים. ועם זאת, בתוך ההקלה הברורה ודמעות השמחה, קול עקשן בתוכי חש אי-נחת, כי אנו יודעים ששלום אמיתי ובר-קיימא עדיין לא הושג.

אי-הנחת הזו נובעת ממציאות קשה: הרעל החתרני של האנטישמיות, האלימות והשנאה לא נוטרל. בחלקים של הגדה המערבית, בעזה, וכן, אפילו בקרב חלקים מסוימים בישראל ובמדינות ברחבי העולם, ילדים עדיין סופגים תכנית לימודים של רדיקליזציה. עלינו להיות ברורים: החינוך הוא שדה הקרב המרכזי. הוא צריך להיות כלי להומניזציה, לבניית גשרים של אמפתיה וכבוד הדדי. במקום זאת, הוא משמש לעתים קרובות מדי כפס ייצור לשנאה ואלימות, שבו הדמוניזציה של עם שלם היא נושא ליבה. המלחמה האידיאולוגית הזו רחוקה מלהסתיים.

ביום כזה, עלינו לדבר גם על אחריות, בקול רם וללא היסוס. מנהיגים ימהרו לקחת קרדיט, ובעוד שפעולות מסוימות ראויות לשבח, איננו יכולים להתעלם מהכישלונות הקולוסאליים שהובילו אותנו לכאן. לאורך הדרך, נעשו טעויות חמורות - אסטרטגיות, מוסריות ואנושיות. אנו חבים לניצולים, למשפחות השכולות ולחטופים ששבו יותר מאשר מחיאות כפיים. אנו חבים להם את האמת הבלתי מרוטשת ואת האחריות הבלתי מתפשרת, כאן בישראל לא פחות מאשר בכל מקום אחר. היינו אומה מפולגת באופן מסוכן, שקועה במלחמות פוליטיות פנימיות שהסיחו את דעתנו מהעדיפויות האמיתיות שלנו. מנהיגינו רדפו אחר רוחות רפאים בתוך החברה שלנו, בזמן שמפלצת התעצמה בשערים.

כאן מהדהדת בעוצמה מצמררת אזהרתו של מהטמה גנדי:

“זהו מעשה פסול ובלתי מוסרי לנסות ולהימלט מתוצאות מעשיו של אדם.”

איננו יכולים - ואסור לנו - פשוט לחגוג ולהמשיך הלאה. לעשות כן יהיה בגידה. מוטלת עלינו חובה קדושה להתבונן לעומק מדוע הגענו לפרק אפל זה, לרדוף צדק ללא לאות, ולהתחיל בעבודה הקשה של תיקון מה שנשבר בתוך אומתנו ומחוצה לה. גם העולם חייב להתעורר מתרדמתו ולהתעמת עם סכנת האידיאולוגיות הרדיקליות והמערכות הבינלאומיות המקיימות אותן. עלינו לדבר על זרם הכספים הציני מבנקים ואפילו מממשלות, אשר תחת מסווה של סיוע או תמיכה פוליטית, מזינים את ארגוני הטרור הללו. הכסף הזה מספק חזות של לגיטימציה לברבריות, ומתדלק רוע טהור שקיים לא רק כאן, אלא בפינות רבות בעולם. איננו יכולים להרשות לעצמנו להמשיך לשתוק.

את הרוע הזה יש לפרק באופן פעיל. זה מתחיל בדרישה ובאכיפה של חינוך נקי מאידיאולוגיות רדיקליות וברבריות. זה אומר גם להתעמת עם הגל החדש והחתרני של אנטישמיות ששטף את העולם, שבו אנשים ממהרים להאשים את ישראל במצב מורכב ואכזרי שנכפה עליה. הגינוי האינסטינקטיבי הזה חייב להיפסק, וצריך להיות מוחלף במאמץ כן ללמוד את העובדות ולהבין את המציאות בשטח.

ובאשר לאותם מנהיגים ופקידי ממשל שהרשלנות וסדרי העדיפויות המעוותים שלהם תרמו לזוועות השבעה באוקטובר - סמכותם המוסרית אבדה. הם אינם יכולים להיות אלו שיובילו אותנו קדימה. דור חדש של מנהיגים חייב לקום, מנהיגים שמבינים שהמנדט שלהם אינו הישרדות עצמית או רווח פוליטי. משימתם חייבת להיות ברורה ומוחלטת: לעבוד ולהוביל ללא הרף למניעת רוע. זוהי חובתה הבסיסית של כל ממשלה, ושל כל חברה. ביום הזה של שיבה, הבה נכבד את החיים ואת המתים בכך שלא נדרוש פחות מכך.
