What is my current definition of software testing?
Testing is verifying that:
…what should happen, happens.
…what shouldn’t happen, doesn’t happen.
…trying something [unexpected] won’t blow up in our face.
…what we expect to work well, works well.
…it’s accessible to as many people as possible.
What role do I play?
Embedded Tester:
Testers are part of cross-functional development teams, working with developers, product managers, and designers. They contribute throughout the development cycle, ensuring testing is continuous and collaborative.
What type of tester am I?
A Comb(?), Automation Engineer, and Quality Coach(?)
Automation Engineer: Testers who focus specifically on building and maintaining test automation frameworks, developing scripts, and implementing automation tools to streamline testing.
Comb: A tester with deep and medium knowledge in two or more areas and a breadth of knowledge across multiple disciplines
Quality Coach: Testers who focus on educating and mentoring other teams on quality practices. They guide teams toward embedding quality into their development processes rather than doing hands-on testing themselves.
I’m a Continuous Learner and a Generalist:
Continuous learners: A majority of testers would describe themselves as continuously learning about their craft
Generalists: Many testers would describe themselves as generalists, meaning they have broad knowledge across many areas. Generalists seek to understand how everything interconnects and often network across teams to identify risks and gain insight into the bigger picture.
Till next time…
